The sleep hormone melatonin: experiences with darkness therapy

An introduction to the sleep hormone

Today’s hectic way of life often leads us to make sleep less of a priority. Although sleep is crucial to our health, many people suffer from what is known as sleep debt – a state in which the body lacks sufficient rest. This lack of sleep has serious consequences for both physical and mental health and for the body’s ability to recover. Yet sleep is essential for the body’s balance, and the sleep hormone melatonin plays an important role in it. In this article we look at how melatonin works and how darkness therapy for sleep can help improve the quality of your sleep.

What is melatonin and how does it work?

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland, a small gland in the brain, and its main function is to regulate the sleep cycle. Melatonin production depends on light conditions – it rises as darkness falls and drops at daybreak. The hormone signals to our body that it is time to rest. When melatonin levels are high, we feel sleepy and ready for sleep.

However, when we expose our eyes to artificial light, especially blue light from electronic devices, melatonin production is disrupted. This problem is common, and it results in poor-quality sleep and reduces the body’s ability to regenerate.

Why darkness matters for melatonin production

Darkness is essential for healthy melatonin production. In a dark environment, melatonin levels rise naturally, preparing the body for sleep. Yet many people spend their evenings in front of a screen, which has a negative impact on their melatonin balance and overall sleep quality. That is why, in recent years, there has been more and more talk of darkness therapy as a natural and effective way to improve sleep and restore healthy sleep habits.

Sleep therapy: a dark retreat as a solution to sleep debt

Darkness therapy for sleep means spending several days in complete darkness, without access to external stimuli or disruptive light. This approach brings a number of benefits:

  • Restoring melatonin balance: Darkness helps increase melatonin production, which supports good-quality, deep sleep.
  • Reducing stress and anxiety: A dark retreat removes distractions and brings a sense of calm and relaxation.
  • Help with interrupted sleep: During the therapy the body gets used to a natural sleep cycle and lets go of habits that may cause frequent waking.

This method is particularly successful for people who suffer from chronic sleep deprivation or irregular sleep.

Experiences with darkness therapy

People who have tried darkness therapy describe feeling a marked improvement after just a few days. Most participants say their sleep became deeper and longer. Another benefit is often a noticeably calmer mind and less stress. Many participants say they have become more aware of how much their sleep needs melatonin and darkness, and they start limiting their use of electronic devices before bed.

One of the benefits people frequently report is an improvement in mood and mental well-being after the therapy. A dark retreat acts as a restart for the mind, which is especially important in today’s rushed times.

Melatonin is a key hormone for our sleep and rest. Unfortunately, modern life is full of disruptive factors that interfere with melatonin production. Darkness therapy for sleep is proving to be an effective way to restore the body’s balance and raise melatonin levels naturally. Darkness therapy not only helps you pay off your sleep debt, it also supports deep regeneration and brings an overall sense of calm.

A week-long dark retreat: a new way to quit drugs

Dark retreat and drugs

The life of someone with an addiction is often full of struggle and constant tension. Finding the way to lasting recovery can be demanding and is not always simple. One revolutionary approach that is becoming more and more popular is darkness therapy – a special retreat in the dark. This intense experience can not only strengthen inner calm and self-reflection, but also help overcome addictions, including drug addiction.

How does darkness therapy help with quitting drugs?

Darkness therapy is a form of deep inner meditation in which a person is isolated from all outside stimuli for a certain time. In complete darkness and silence, the body and mind get the space to heal and reset. Drug addiction often arises from trying to escape stress, problems or one’s own emotions. A week-long dark retreat makes it possible to face these feelings in a safe environment, where you can focus on yourself without distractions from your surroundings.

Withdrawing from the world brings new awareness

A week in the dark offers a unique space for inner work. Isolation from the outside world brings intense experiences and makes it possible to perceive and process the inner blocks that have often led to drug use. During this therapy, deep introspection takes place, along with awareness of the real roots of the addiction. The result can be not only a new perspective on life, but also the ability to face problems without needing to reach for addictive substances.

A week-long dark retreat as a time of withdrawal

Everyone who decides on a dark retreat goes through a period in which their body and mind undergo a cleanse. During this therapy, an addicted body goes through an intense healing process. A week-long dark retreat gives enough time for the body to begin regenerating and for withdrawal symptoms to become more bearable. Combined with regular care and a therapeutic approach, darkness therapy can be effective support in the process of quitting.

Book darkness therapy and start a new life

If you are trying to quit drugs and are looking for a way to find balance and calm again, a dark retreat may be the right solution. Give yourself time, go through a process of inner transformation and discover the strength that will help you overcome addiction.

Discover inner calm with darkness therapy: emotions are neither good nor bad, they just are

Darkness therapy, also known as a dark retreat, is a unique way of deepening self-knowledge and calm. It is a path that helps us look deep into our inner world, where we discover that dividing emotions into “good” and “bad” is just an illusion. Many people find that every emotion has its place and meaning – a dark retreat gives us the space to understand them.

What is darkness therapy?

Darkness therapy is an ancient technique that has become popular with people longing for personal growth and calm. On a dark retreat you find yourself in absolute darkness, free of the distracting outside stimuli that surround us every day. In silence and darkness you begin to notice your thoughts, emotions and patterns of behaviour in a completely new light. Without distractions, we can finally give ourselves the time and space to process what is really going on inside us.

How does a dark retreat reveal the illusion of emotions?

In everyday life we tend to divide our emotions into “good” and “bad”. Joy, enthusiasm and love are often seen as positive emotions, while sadness, anger or fear tend to be labelled negative. Darkness therapy, however, shows that this division is a mere illusion. In the dark we begin to sense that every emotion has its purpose and comes to teach us something.

A dark retreat allows us to experience and accept all our emotions without judgement. Little by little we learn that even the so-called “bad” emotions, such as sadness or fear, are an essential part of our personal journey. In the dark we gain a new perspective on our inner experiences – we stop resisting our emotions and accept them as they are.

Why choose a dark retreat?

Anyone looking for a deeper connection with themselves can benefit from a dark retreat. The experience will help you slow down, gain clarity of thought and understand your emotions in depth. As well as freeing you from illusions about emotions, darkness therapy offers a unique opportunity to relax and find balance.

Accept your emotions with darkness therapy

If you want to truly understand that all emotions are a natural part of being human, a dark retreat is exactly what you are looking for. Be with yourself, discover new perspectives on your experiences and find inner calm. Darkness therapy will teach you that every emotion has its place – and none of them is either good or bad.

How can a dark retreat deepen your gratitude?

In today’s world, full of constant rush, information overload and non-stop outside stimulation, it’s easy to forget the small things we have in life and how important gratitude is. One way of deepening that feeling is a radical method of self-discovery and meditation – a dark retreat. Let’s look at how a dark retreat can support our ability to feel gratitude, and why this particular method is becoming more and more popular.

What is a dark retreat?

A dark retreat is an ancient meditation technique found in various cultures, particularly in the Buddhist and Taoist traditions. During this practice you isolate yourself in complete darkness, stillness and silence for anywhere from several days to several weeks. The process lets you cut yourself off completely from outside stimuli, which gives you a unique opportunity to focus on your thoughts, feelings and inner states.

How darkness supports gratitude

  1. Shutting out the outside world
In everyday life our attention is often scattered and focused on constantly satisfying immediate needs and wants. A dark retreat frees us from these distractions completely. Suddenly we realise how little we need to be happy. Without modern technology, social interaction or luxury, we start to appreciate the basics, such as light, nature and the simple feeling of being.
  2. Deeper self-awareness
In the dark there’s time to reflect on what we truly consider important in our lives. When we’re cut off from all distractions, we become more sensitive to our own thoughts and feelings. This deeper awareness often leads us to realise that much of what we take for granted is in fact a source of great joy and gratitude.
  3. Time slows down
Without outside cues such as glancing at a clock or daylight, time passes more slowly in the dark. This gives you the chance for calm introspection and contemplation. This state of slowness lets us appreciate the little things that pass us by in everyday life. Silence and stillness give us room to realise how much happiness there is in ordinary moments.
  4. Rethinking your values
A dark retreat often gives us a new perspective on our life so far. When you don’t have access to the usual stimuli, such as your mobile phone or the television, you start thinking about what really matters. This often leads us to value our relationships, health, nature and the simple joys we used to overlook.
  5. Awakening the senses
When sight is temporarily taken away, the other senses become sharper. Touch, hearing, smell and taste deepen. By perceiving more through these senses, we begin to appreciate more of everything the world gives us. Every sensation becomes a source of pleasure and a reminder of how rich life is, even in the simplest things.

Practical tips for using a dark retreat to deepen gratitude

  • Focus on the present: During a dark retreat it helps to notice what you’re feeling here and now. Reflect on what you’re grateful for and what you’ve rediscovered during your stay.
  • Think about the people close to you: The darkness gives you space to reflect on your relationships and the role they play in your life. Ask yourself which relationships enrich you and how you can express gratitude to the people around you.
  • Become aware of your basic needs: Water, food, a roof over your head – all these things become clearer in the dark. Realising how fortunate we are to have these seemingly obvious things can be a powerful step towards deeper gratitude.

Summary

A dark retreat is a deeply transformative experience that lets people not only deepen their self-knowledge but also feel more grateful for the ordinary parts of life. In this calm, secluded setting our mind becomes more sensitive and open to the things we would otherwise overlook. It’s a unique way to rediscover the beauty of simplicity and to rejoice in what we already have.

We have given away 1.44 million CZK

We really appreciate that when you come for a dark retreat, you choose to come to us. We have been running our centre near Kutná Hora for 10 years now, since 2013, and in that time more than 2,000 participants have spent time with us in the dark.

Darkness therapy gifts add up and last a long time

Some participants have been with us as many as 5 times, so we sent them gift vouchers worth 5,000 CZK. The vouchers can be used all at once for a single dark retreat, or gradually.

We don’t want to bring in any restrictive rules saying you can only use one at a time or that they are only valid for a short while. A gift voucher is valid for 12 months. That means you need to redeem it within 12 months, but the date of your dark retreat can be later, even another 3 or 4 months on.

Three friends lying in the grass

You can give a dark retreat to someone close to you

The gift vouchers aren’t just for participants who have been in the dark with us. They are issued without a name, so you can give one to your loved ones, to someone at work or to friends. It’s entirely up to you.

Over those 10 years so many participants have come to us that we have given away dark retreat vouchers worth 1.44 million CZK.

Thank you for being with us. We look forward to seeing you in the dark

Smokers welcome on a dark retreat

I was just thinking about how to make the dark retreat here near Kutná Hora even more pleasant for participants. Last year we added underfloor heating, and this winter we have also given each participant control over the temperature.

I was looking at the websites of other dark retreat providers, and I admit I’m delighted at how many new dark retreat centres have sprung up since we opened. Yes, it’s been 10 years now … time flies 🙂

Choosing who gets a dark retreat

On lots of websites I found that the centres are non-smoking. On the website of one centre with caravans I noticed an interesting requirement: they don’t want smokers to come to them for a dark retreat.

Freedom and love on a dark retreat

That surprised me a little, and then it dawned on me that not every centre, not every provider holds freedom and love as the highest values of humanity. I ask myself: is a fly or a crocodile more important to the creator? Does the Sun ever say “look, that one over there takes drugs, so I won’t shine on him”?

Because I think real love comes from respect for yourself and for others.

In Kutná Hora, smokers are welcome on a dark retreat

We are a non-smoking centre too, and we ask people not to smoke here. I’m not thrilled about picking cigarette butts out of the grass either, because smokers often don’t realise how much litter they create. That’s why we also ask participants to have their cigarette before they start their dark retreat.

But we won’t refuse someone a dark retreat with us just because they smoke. After all, darkness therapy works for smokers and alcoholics too. Smokers are no less human than non-smokers. As human beings, we are all equal.

Darkness therapy for smokers too

Darkness therapy for drug users

That’s why everyone is welcome here, including drug addicts, alcoholics and smokers. We simply believe that everyone deserves a dark retreat. During a dark retreat, smokers usually have much less of a craving for a cigarette. And is it possible not to smoke in the dark? Yes, it is! We go to the pharmacy for nicotine sprays or gum.

What probably warms my heart the most is when a smoker who did the dark with us writes to tell me they haven’t lit up since, and it’s been several months.

Isn’t a dark retreat actually a miracle?❤️

Repairing our dark retreat cabins after 10 years

It really has been 10 years since we built our first, “west” sanctuary for dark retreats.

In that time, more than 500 participants have stayed in it.

The little cabin had started to sink into the ground, and there was a risk of it soaking up damp from the soil.

So we borrowed a car jack from the next village, lifted the cabin a little and set every ground screw in concrete.

We used a free week when no participant was booked for a dark retreat in the west sanctuary.

Thanks to this, the darkness therapy sanctuary no longer sinks and can go on serving future participants.

And why come for a dark retreat to us in particular, one of the oldest dark retreat centres?

Thank you for being with us <3

A 3-night dark retreat

It is 3 years since we introduced the rule that dark retreats can only be booked in multiples of whole weeks. It worked well for many of you, and even if you didn’t feel up to a whole week, in the end over 95% of you completed the full week and were glad you did.

We realise, however, that we may have put some people off a dark retreat altogether, and so for some of them we may have done more harm than good.

So we are bringing back, temporarily, the option to book 3 nights starting on a Wednesday or a Saturday. We will try it this way for 2-3 months, then review your experiences and either keep it or go back to the week in the dark.

Below, you can book any sanctuary that happens to be free. The price for 4 calendar days (3 nights) is set at half the weekly price … more about prices

We still believe that 3 nights in the dark are a kind of taster: you get a good sleep and “try out” what a dark retreat is like.

Length of stay

Terrified of the dark and want to break through that fear and prove to yourself you can do it? Arrival is always on a Tuesday.

Not sure whether a dark retreat is for you? Start with three nights — it is a full encounter with the darkness, you will get a good rest, and you can come for a week next time. Arrival on Wednesday or Saturday.

A complete immersion in the dark. Arrival on Saturday, occasionally on Wednesday. The most popular choice.

For repeat dark retreats, people usually choose a multiple of weeks. Arrival on Saturday. Recommended for experienced practitioners.

Coming solo or as a couple

A solo practitioner usually works on themselves, their feelings and their life situation.

Couples usually work on their relationship, deepening their bond and their love. That is why the Sanctuary of Love cabin is meant for couples.

Meals

Nothing to arrange or bring — vegetarian meals for the whole day.

You bring your own food, or you fast. An electric kettle is available.

When would a dark retreat suit you

We arrange dates individually — just give us a rough idea of when you would like to come and we will get back to you with specific available dates.

Here are a few tips on how to improve your physical and mental health so that you can voluntarily spend a week in the dark.

Preparing for a dark retreat

  1. Prepare your mind and body. Before you begin sensory deprivation, it is important to prepare your mind and body. That means getting good sleep, eating healthy food and exercising regularly. It is also important to relax and clear your mind of all worries and stress.
  2. Create a pleasant environment. The environment you choose to spend your time in will have a big influence on your experience. Make sure the room is dark, quiet and comfortable. You may want to bring some pillows and blankets to feel more at home.
  3. Set realistic expectations. It is important to set realistic expectations about your experience. Sensory deprivation can be a powerful experience, but it is not always easy. It is normal to feel anxious, claustrophobic or disoriented at times. If you start to feel overwhelmed, take a break and come back to it later.
  4. Listen to your body. During a sensory deprivation experience, it is important to listen to your body. If you start to feel uncomfortable, take a break. There is no need to push yourself too hard. Be patient. It may take you a while to get used to sensory deprivation. Be patient with yourself and allow yourself to get used to the experience. Over time, you may find that you enjoy the calm and quiet of a dark room.

A few more benefits of a dark retreat

  1. Reduces stress and anxiety. Sensory deprivation can help reduce stress and anxiety by reducing the amount of stimulation your brain receives. This can help calm the mind and body and promote relaxation.
  2. Improves sleep. Sensory deprivation can help improve sleep by creating a calm and relaxing environment. This can help shorten the time it takes to fall asleep and improve the quality of your sleep.
  3. Increases relaxation. Sensory deprivation can help increase relaxation by reducing the amount of stimulation your brain receives. This can help calm both mind and body and promote a sense of calm and wellbeing.
  4. Boosts creativity. Sensory deprivation can help boost creativity by giving the mind room to wander and explore new ideas. It can be a useful way to come up with new solutions to problems or generate fresh creative ideas.
  5. Expands awareness. Sensory deprivation can help expand awareness by giving the mind room to explore new areas of thought and experience. It can be a useful way to gain a new perspective on yourself and the world around you.

If you are considering trying a dark retreat and are unsure about your health, it is important to talk to a health professional first. They can help you decide whether it is right for you and give you guidance on how to experience it safely.
