Ten days in the dark

In an article on Novinky, Vlasta Vyčichlová writes about her ten-day dark retreat.

She writes that she went into the dark feeling that she was her own best friend.

How it started with darkness therapy

She had first heard about darkness therapy several years earlier, and the information stuck in her mind. When she read that darkness healing was now being offered near where she lived too, she didn’t hesitate. She picked up the phone and booked a retreat. Naturally, the people around her tried to talk her out of it, saying she would go mad there and so on. A few days before she was due to start, she even came down with flu and her back started to hurt. She says her ego put up all the resistance it could.

Many ancient cultures, in ancient America as well as in the East, knew the cleansing dark retreat. Those who decide to undergo it spend one to seven weeks alone, cut off from all light. The result is a clear cleansing, release and an understanding of the deeper connections in life.

A European standard for healing in the dark

Europeans are used to a certain standard. The dark retreat takes place in a small wooden cabin with a little entrance room containing a washbasin, a bidet, a composting toilet and a shower. Fruit, herbal tea and muesli are usually to hand, and meals come twice a day. Beyond that, all you need is a bed and a chat once a day with a guide, someone who has done darkness therapy themselves. If anyone feels they are going mad, they can switch on the light at any time. But that doesn’t happen.
