A dark retreat for a week, or for 3 nights?
The question I get most often before a booking is a simple one: is a 3-night dark retreat enough, or is it better to go straight for a week-long dark retreat? Lenča and I have been guiding people through darkness near Kutná Hora since 2013, and in that time we’ve watched more than three thousand people walk into the dark. And this question keeps coming back, over and over.
Both make sense. Each length just does something a little different to your body and mind. Here it is from our practice – no needless theory.
Why people mostly think in weeks
We’re used to living in weeks – the working week, the weekend, a holiday. That’s why, for a lot of people, a week in the dark is the most natural choice. At the same time we see that even three days in the dark have quite a big effect on the body and the head. It’s not “just a taster”. It’s real, full time in which a lot of things start to move.
I also made a short video about it where I explain it more from practice – have a look if you like.
A 3-night dark retreat

Three nights are often the first step. People come to us when they can’t take a whole week off, or when they’re a bit afraid of the dark and want to try it first. And it works.
What we see in them most often:
- Better sleep. The body starts producing melatonin on its own and the sleep rhythm settles quickly. Lots of people say they finally sleep the way they haven’t in a long time.
- Less stress. Without images and stimuli the nervous system calms down. Then comes that deep relaxation where, for the first time in ages, you don’t feel you have to sort anything out.
- New ideas. Once you drop out of the everyday noise, thoughts often start to surface that you never had the space to hear before.
Three nights are enough to find out how the darkness affects you and to get to know it. Many people leave us feeling “that was great, but I’d like more”. And that’s completely fine.
A week-long dark retreat

A week is for those who want to go deeper. The first days are mostly spent sleeping off your sleep debt – the body takes what it needs. Only once that’s done is there more time awake, and that’s when the more interesting part begins.
What people often describe after a week:
- Deeper experiences. The mind starts sifting through emotions and thoughts you would normally push down. It isn’t always pleasant, but it’s honest.
- A settled body clock. Circadian rhythms settle much better in a week than in three nights. People leave feeling as if a light has come on.
- A different view of life. They often lose track of time and leave with different priorities. They tell us it helped them get clear about what really matters to them.
Many participants describe it as a reset. Not because we “healed” anything in them, but because they finally gave themselves time they don’t have in everyday life.
Up to 80 % of people say three nights were too short
That number isn’t marketing. It comes from our experience and from the reviews people write us. Many of them come carefully for 3 nights first and book a week next time. A few genuine reactions from Google reviews:
It was great, but 3 days were short, I’m already looking forward to autumn when I’ll go into the dark for a whole week.
Hanka Gabrielová, March 2026
I’ve been on this dark retreat twice, first carefully for 3 nights, now for 6. The best time for focus and for resting the body and the eyes.
Jiří Matějček, January 2026
Only 3 days, but a symbolic awakening in the dark still happened. (…) I’m planning to come back for a week.
Jan Blažek, December 2025

| Right for you if | You don’t have a whole week or you’re afraid of the dark | You want to go deep and change your priorities |

Why a week in the dark goes deeper
From our experience it’s simple: the first days are mostly about sleeping. Only once the sleep debt is paid off is there more time awake, and you start meeting yourself. That longer time is where self-discovery grows – the kind you usually won’t get to in three nights.
Some people experience visual things or altered states during the week – it’s not the rule, but it happens. Research suggests a longer stay may support neuroplasticity and affect metabolism too, but we mostly see it in how people leave and what they write to us afterwards.
