Ten days in the dark

In an article on Novinky, Vlasta Vyčichlová writes about her ten-day dark retreat.

She writes that she went into the dark feeling that she was her own best friend.

How it started with darkness therapy

She had first heard about darkness therapy several years earlier, and the information stuck in her mind. When she read that darkness healing was now being offered near where she lived too, she didn’t hesitate. She picked up the phone and booked a retreat. Naturally, the people around her tried to talk her out of it, saying she would go mad there and so on. A few days before she was due to start, she even came down with flu and her back started to hurt. She says her ego put up all the resistance it could.

Many ancient cultures, in ancient America as well as in the East, knew the cleansing dark retreat. Those who decide to undergo it spend one to seven weeks alone, cut off from all light. The result is a clear cleansing, release and an understanding of the deeper connections in life.

A European standard for healing in the dark

Europeans are used to a certain standard. The dark retreat takes place in a small wooden cabin with a little entrance room containing a washbasin, a bidet, a composting toilet and a shower. Fruit, herbal tea and muesli are usually to hand, and meals come twice a day. Beyond that, all you need is a bed and a chat once a day with a guide, someone who has done darkness therapy themselves. If anyone feels they are going mad, they can switch on the light at any time. But that doesn’t happen.

Darkness therapy is not shock therapy

Shock therapy is a popular method of treatment. But let’s take a look at how things really stand with a dark retreat.

The effects of shock therapy

Shock is really the reverse order of an experience. What actually happens is that we first live through something, completely unconsciously, and only afterwards do we gradually realise what has actually happened.

In shock, a person is “sort of out of it” and doesn’t fully live through the whole situation. If, for example, someone is afraid of spiders and wants to try shock therapy, they will probably have a big hairy spider put on their palm. Now there are 3 possible outcomes:

1) the person has a heart attack – hooray, we nearly finished off the patient, who in all likelihood will never go near a spider again

2) the person freezes – the paralysis is triggered by the reptilian brain, when the fear is so strong that it causes the physiological freeze response; sometimes the freezing lets go, and so does the fear

3) the person experiences the closeness and touch of the spider and finds out that it won’t hurt them, yet they still get a shiver down their spine and a twitch in their hand – with repetition, the fear could disappear completely

Darkness therapy is gradual

When you step into the darkness, there is no shock reaction. The darkness is all around you, but it doesn’t attack you in any way, nor does it test you.

It is only after a few minutes, or hours, that you actually realise you can’t see.

So this is a gradual but thorough therapy, in which stored emotions and situations are slowly washed up to the surface, and you have enough time to fully live through each emotion and give it your attention.

Darkness therapy isn’t just for slowcoaches

If you’re into adrenaline sports and worry that darkness therapy isn’t for you, it may well be quite the opposite. A change of life for a few days works wonders, even if you don’t jump out of a plane at four kilometres.

We believe that a thorough journey at the practitioner’s own pace is the fastest way to your divinity, to your higher self.

How do I know I should try darkness therapy?

How do you know you’re in love? It’s a similar question. Some people feel it very strongly, others more faintly, but everyone feels it.

Signs that you need darkness therapy

  1. You feel run off your feet and need to “switch off”
  2. You feel the need to “switch off” even on holiday, when all you do is rest
  3. You feel inner restlessness and nervousness
  4. You feel something is missing, but you don’t know what
  5. You have been through a tragedy close to you and need to be alone
  6. You are looking for light and love and still can’t find them
  7. You have already tried “everything” and still feel sad and empty inside

When exactly is the time for a dark retreat?

  1. You will feel the desire to go on a dark retreat right inside you
  2. You can happily ignore your mind’s attempts to tell you it’s pointless 🙂
  3. Thoughts that you don’t need a dark retreat are completely normal
  4. Emotions such as panic and fear are normal too
  5. Worrying about getting bored during a dark retreat is normal too
  6. A dark retreat is illogical, incomprehensible and unnatural … and that’s normal too

Still have doubts about darkness therapy?

Send us an email or have a look at our Facebook page, and we will do our best to advise you.

!!! Beware of know-it-alls !!!

Please take advice from someone who has actually been on a dark retreat. A person who has never been in the dark is in no way qualified to talk about it; all they will give you is a mix of prejudices and assumptions.

Participants’ experiences of dark retreats

A long line of participants have already shared their experiences of dark retreats.

Darkness therapy

Darkness therapy is a form of therapy (a healing process) in which the practitioner is enclosed in a dark room that no light can get into.

Darkness therapy is not new

In Tibet, China and Japan we can find darkness therapy going back several thousand years. When monks shut themselves away in the dark for long weeks and months, they of course didn’t call it therapy; it’s only us “modern people” who call it darkness therapy.

For the pains of today’s humanity, when there will soon be more therapists, psychiatrists and psychologists than patients, darkness therapy is ideal, and in recent years it has started to be offered to the public.

How darkness therapy works

The practitioner (a word we prefer to patient) is enclosed in a room with no access to light. The sanctuary is sealed against light. Since sight is our dominant sense, our mind becomes so completely confused that it allows the practitioner to connect with their higher self, with their personal divinity, known in India as Antaryamin.

This connection helps to find stored emotions and little hurts that are hidden and completely invisible in everyday life, so the practitioner can see their troubles “as clear as day” and gets to know themselves better.

Questions for which to choose darkness therapy:

  • Who am I?
  • Who sent me here?
  • Why am I not bigger?
  • Why are they doing this to me, of all people?
  • Nobody loves me!

If you suffer physically from skin problems, an eating disorder or internal pain, darkness therapy is suitable for you.

How long should your darkness therapy be?

Usually 7 days is enough, that is 7 nights: into the dark on Saturday afternoon and out of the dark on Saturday morning. We don’t really recommend less than 7 days, because it takes about 3 days for the mind to calm down and for the connection with your higher self to grow stronger.

We should point out, however, that the length of darkness therapy comes from you; if you feel you should be in the dark for only 6 days, we will arrange it that way. The maximum length of stay, however, is 7 weeks.

Dark retreat

A dark retreat is a kind of stay in which the practitioner spends time in a sanctuary that no light can get into.

The dark retreat has a long tradition

We can find the practice of dark retreats in Tibet, China and Japan going back several thousand years. Monks were shut away in the dark for long weeks, and there are even accounts of dark retreats lasting several months. Legends of stays lasting several years may be true, or may not.

In the last few years dark retreats have started to be offered to the public, even in Europe – in Germany, France, England and other countries.

Healing through a dark retreat

The point of a dark retreat is to remove one sense, and that is sight. The brain relies on sight for 70%, so when sight is cut off by darkness, our mind becomes so confused that it allows a connection with our higher self, with our personal divinity, known in India as Antaryamin.

This connection helps to unblock old, blocked emotions in the form of charges, so the practitioner has a much easier path to knowing themselves.

If you are struggling existentially and are troubled by questions like “why am I here?”, “what is my purpose?”, or if you are suffering psychologically, “why is this happening to me of all people?”, “why am I so unlucky?”, “why does life keep throwing obstacles in my way?”, or if you are suffering physically with things like eczema, psoriasis, back and joint pain, a dark retreat is just made for you.

How long should your dark retreat be?

One week is usually enough. We don’t recommend less than a week, because it takes the mind about 3 days to “throw its tantrum” before the connection with your higher self gets going. On repeat dark retreats you can add an extra week, but never more than 7 weeks in a row.

We do stress, however, that the length of a dark retreat comes from within you; if you feel you should be in the dark for exactly 5 days, or 15 days, we will adapt and make the stay possible for you.
