For many people, darkness therapy is not just a way to rest but also a path to deep self-knowledge. Every dark retreat brings unique experiences and challenges that can change the way you see life. How do those who have been through darkness therapy see it? Here we share the genuine experience of one of our clients.
A dark retreat as the best holiday
“I rested better than ever, the best holiday you could possibly imagine.” That’s how one of our clients describes his dark retreat. The chance to slow down, be alone with yourself and let your mind rest is, for many, an experience that can’t be had any other way. Everyday life often doesn’t allow you to stop and become fully aware of the present moment. A dark retreat, however, offers exactly that opportunity.
The first days: sleep and a calming mind
“First you get a good sleep, a really good one, for about three or four days.” Clients often describe how at the start of a dark retreat the body catches up on its sleep debt. After this phase comes a process in which the mind starts working more intensely. Thoughts may go round in circles, and suppressed emotions and memories come to the surface.
Deep awareness and calm
According to our clients’ experience, the initial chaos is followed by a state of calm and harmony. “I think a week is too short,” came one of the answers. For many, a dark retreat is so intense and so valuable that they would gladly make it longer. “Next time I’d probably go for two weeks,” says a client who already has his first experience behind him.
Darkness therapy is not only about rest but above all about working with your own mind and emotions. Every dark retreat is different, but they all have one thing in common – they bring deep self-knowledge and a new view of the world.
